![]() Considering that the goodwill of humans can't be trusted, this 'quirk' brings us back to square one in regards to distracted driving. While Android Auto essentially turns your headunit into a display by doing all the processing on the device, it does not disable the mobile phone, allowing the driver to use the phone to its full capability while being connected to the headunit, and while driving. My gripe here isn't with the cost or with aftermarket solutions, or with the software experience. First being the need to adjust a bulky screen without blocking the AC vents or the view over the dashboard, the second being the clunkiness of running wires around the dashboard, and the third being the high cost ($180-$280). The phone connects to the device via USB and the audio is sinked to the present head unit either by bluetooth or auxiliary input cable. They cost anywhere from $250 to $400 and requires a specialist for installation.Īftermarket solutions like Carpuride(TM) tend to solve the problem of needing a specialist installer or the need to replace the head unit in the first place by having a dedicated monitor be hooked onto the windshield or the dashboard. These features only come with either newer cars or require an aftermarket replacement headunits for older cars. These technologies are one step forward and two steps back. While they reduce distracted driving related incidents, they come at a cost that is prohibitively high. These bring basic driving necessities like maps, calling and music to the dashboard, without needing to touch the phone. Modern car manufacturers and tech giants like Google and Apple are solving this problem with integrating the cell phones in the head units by making dedicated software like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. ![]() Distracted driving is the leading cause of accidents, casualties and fatalities, and cell phones contribute a major chunk to that statistic. While having their positives as they do, they also posses their negatives, even have expensive and or deadly consequences, especially when paired with driving. With the capability to connect with people far away to access information effortlessly, cellphones has revolutionised our lives. Innovation is a beautiful thing and it’s been very visible with the cell phones that 90% of the population has in their pockets. ![]()
